Music therapy is the targeted use of music within the therapeutic relationship to restore, maintain, and promote emotional, physical, and mental health.
It can be active (e.g., through playing an instrument or singing) or receptive (through listening to specific music). Music therapy is used in various fields, such as psychiatry, geriatrics, rehabilitation, special education, and palliative care.
Music therapy is effective because music provides a means of emotional expression and promotes emotional balance.
Music can have a calming, stimulating, or structuring effect. It helps reduce stress and alleviate anxiety or pain.
Music supports nonverbal communication, especially for people with speech difficulties caused by illness.
Music activates the brain holistically, which can be beneficial in cases of neurological conditions such as dementia or stroke.
